Discover the simplest and most efficient basic skincare routine in just 3 steps.
Start taking better care of your skin with this easy-to-follow guide of a basic skincare routine.
When I thought about writing this article about a simple skincare routine, I paused to reflect on what Past Fabio would have searched for on the internet when the desire to start taking better care of his skin arose. Skincare is a habit, and we know how challenging it can be to establish new habits. That’s why I came up with the idea of organizing in this post the simplest and most efficient basic skincare routine that can exist in just 3 steps.
It’s all up to you, but…
Drawing from all that I have learned over these years of research and deep dive into this subject. After reading this article, it’s all up to you, but you can count on me if you need any encouragement, have questions, or want to share how your skincare routine has been and the changes you’ve noticed in your skin.
It’s crucial to do at least the minimum I’ll show here, not only for aesthetic reasons but mainly to have healthy skin. Come with me, and you gonna get it!
Daytime Skincare Routine
Step 1: Cleanser
Even if you’ve cleaned your face before bedtime, washing it when you wake up is important to have and maintain a healthy dermis. This will remove any leftover products, excess oil, and other impurities that accumulate while you sleep. Additionally, with clean skin, moisturizers, or serums can penetrate more deeply and act more effectively.
You can use a basic, gentle facial cleanser that won’t damage your skin’s natural barrier, which is its protective layer. For this, I recommend one of three options that I’ve personally been using, depending on the need of the moment:
Cetaphil Hydrating Foaming Cream Cleanser is one of my favorites because it never harms my skin, it’s super gentle and this new texture has the best of both worlds! It’s moisturizing, gliding and lathers lightly, which gives me a better oil-removing sensation that makes me feel clean and fresh!
Youth To The People is a brand that I fell in love at the first sign, it has everything that matches with me and this Superfood Cleanser is simply wonderful in every aspect! I love that it removes impurities without damaging, it has a pleasant smell and leaves a feeling refreshment, not to mention the beautiful and ecological glass bottle! When it finish, just buy the refill!
CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser is the fragrance-free option for oily and sensitive skin. I’ve used it for a long time and maybe I’ll use it again, but I prefer scented products.
Step 2: Moisturizer
Please forgive the ignorance of my 17-year-old self, but I used to think facial moisturizers were unnecessary due to the extreme oiliness of my skin back then. Dealing with severe acne, I believed that oiliness was my main enemy, so I avoided using moisturizers for many years! Little did I know, I was mistaken. Thankfully, years later, my interest in skincare grew, and I began to read and research extensively on the topic.
I discovered the importance of keeping the skin hydrated (in fact, keeping the entire body hydrated), and yes, it all starts with the water you drink! Even if you have oily or combination skin, the right facial moisturizer can help balance the oil level in your skin, believe it or not! Moisturizers are indispensable, and the best part is that today they come in various textures and densities. Choose the one that feels most comfortable for you.
SuperFood Air-Whip Moisture Cream I can’t contain my excitement about this moisturizer! My lovely cousin gifted it to me and since then, I can’t stop using it day and night. Even though I have a stash of other moisturizers, this one has become my absolute favorite. This lightweight cream floods skin with natural hydrating ingredients for efficient moisture that’s not heavy or greasy. Superfood and vitamin-rich, it cools and comforts skin, leaving a natural glow. It’s suitable for sensitive and acne-prone skin, will not clog pores, and layers well with makeup.
Step 3: SPF
Sun protection is crucial for your overall health and well-being. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can wreak havoc on your skin, eyes, and even your immune system. Too much exposure to these rays can lead to sunburn, premature aging, eye issues, and even skin cancer. Shockingly, the World Health Organization reports that four out of five cases of skin cancer could have been prevented, as most UV damage is avoidable.
That’s why sunscreen is your best friend. Make sure to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, and apply it generously and evenly to all exposed areas of the skin. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours, or after sweating or swimming.
Remember, sun protection isn’t just for summer or beach days – it’s an everyday necessity, no matter where you are!
Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence If you’re looking for a comfortable and less bothersome sunscreen to use daily, I highly recommend this one! After trying several different sunscreens, I found this one to be most comfy to use all day long. In fact, I recommended it to my parents and sister, and they’ve been using it every day since then! When applied to the skin, this sunscreen becomes like water, leaving it hydrated, refreshed, and it’s completely transparent without leaving a film.
Nighttime Skincare Routine
Step 1: Cleansing
It’s important to cleanse the skin in the morning and before bedtime. By the end of the day, your skin accumulates a lot more impurities due to pollution, sunscreen, and makeup. There’s a lot more dirt to be removed, and for that, we have the option of using the same cleanser we used in the morning – there’s no problem with that as long as you take the necessary precautions.
For example, some sunscreens can’t be removed with just water and cleanser; some require cleansing oil, and the same goes for waterproof makeup. For these cases, I recommend the famous double cleansing method, which involves first using a cleansing oil followed by a facial cleanser.
Even if your sunscreen can be removed with just water and cleanser, you can still benefit from double cleansing because this type of cleansing is deeper and can help remove impurities and even blackheads from your face. Here’s an exclusive guide on double cleansing step by step, stay tuned!
Step 2: Exfoliation (Acids)
When it comes to facial exfoliation, please don’t think of using creams with granules – that’s not the type of exfoliation I’m referring to, and I strongly advise against it. It’s much safer and better in many aspects to remove dead cells and renew your skin using acids specifically designed for this purpose. Cellular renewal through acids not only removes dead cells but also helps combat blemishes, unclog pores, and firms your skin by stimulating collagen production.
Exfoliation acids – also known as chemical exfoliants. This method involves using organic acids to break down the bonds that hold onto those dull, lifeless skin cells on the surface of your skin. The result is that your skin naturally sheds those dead particles, unveiling a smoother, brighter, and more even complexion.
There are different types of exfoliating acids to choose from, like alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). AHAs are water-soluble and work their magic in the upper layers of your skin, while BHAs are oil-soluble, allowing them to dive deeper into your pores to dissolve any blockages lurking within. Depending on your skin type and specific concerns, you can pick the acid that’s best suited for your nightly skincare routine.
So, if you’re looking to kick dullness to the curb and reveal that radiant glow, incorporating exfoliating acids into your regimen is the ticket! I’ve written a whole post explaining everything about the acids you can and should use on your skin, so come on!
Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant
The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution
Step 3: Moisturizer
After applying the serum or acid-based cream, follow up with your favorite moisturizer. It could be one of the ones I recommended for morning use or something specific for nighttime. During this time, you can opt for a richer, denser moisturizer as it will create a protective barrier on your skin, allowing it to make the most of the serum, acid, or moisturizer can offer while you sleep.
If the acid you’ve chosen to use is potent and has the potential to irritate or sensitize your skin, consider applying the moisturizer before the acid. The order of applying between acid and moisturizer is entirely up to your preference and needs. Experiment with different products and get to know your skin better.
Tips for Sensitive Skin
If you have sensitive skin and want to use acids, consult your dermatologist to determine what you can and cannot use. There are excellent acids that are gentle on sensitive skin. For example, I have rosacea and I use azelaic acid and retinol and everything is fine. I always count on the guidance and approval of my dermatologist.
Benefits of Consistent Skincare
Maintaining a consistent skincare routine is the key to keeping your skin healthy and looking its best. Here’s why sticking to a basic skincare routine can offer you some fantastic long-term benefits:
- Improved skin texture and appearance: By staying faithful to your skincare routine, you’re actively working towards enhancing your skin’s texture and appearance. Regular exfoliation helps slough off dead skin cells and clear out pores, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. Plus, consistent use can stimulate collagen production, keeping your skin firm and youthful.
- Enhanced skin barrier function: Your skin’s natural barrier is like its own personal bodyguard, shielding it from environmental aggressors. Sticking to your routine, you’re helping to strengthen this barrier, locking in moisture and protecting against damage from the elements. A robust skin barrier means better hydration and a lower risk of infections.
- Reduced inflammation: Consistency is key when it comes to keeping inflammation at bay. While a little inflammation is a normal response to injury or infection, chronic inflammation can wreak havoc on your skin, leading to issues like acne and redness. By sticking to your routine, you can help calm inflammation and keep your skin fabulous and healthy.
In conclusion, establishing a basic skincare routine doesn’t just promise immediate benefits; it’s a commitment to the long-term health and vibrancy of your skin. Whether you’re tackling issues like dullness, acne, or aging, consistency is the key to unlocking the full potential of your skincare regimen.
By adhering to a simple yet effective routine, you’re not only improving your skin’s texture and appearance but also fortifying its natural defenses against environmental stressors. This means fewer breakouts, less redness, and ultimately, a more radiant complexion that stands the test of time.
